Relics of War
A guide to the 20th Century Military Remains in the Northumberland Landscape
This book provides an overview of the many 20th century military remains that can be found in the Northumberland countryside. Many different sites are described and they are put into their historical context.
Most of us know about the concrete blocks on the beaches, and maybe some of the pillboxes. But there is much more to be seen, including practice trenches from WW1, airfields, artillery sites, underground “resistance” bases, radar stations and Cold War bunkers.
The book has 40 pages, including 27 photographs (16 in colour) and two maps and is priced at £4.50. Post and packing is free in the UK.
Some useful links to websites:
The Pillbox Study Group - the name is perhaps self-explanatory. They have lots of information about various military sites in the UK.
Subterranea Britannica are a group who study underground structures, many of which are military.
Archaeological Data Service hosts the Defence of Britain database that records the majority of the UK’s military remains
Fortress Study Group - the name is again self-explanatory. They have lots of information about military structures.
